Long ago friends from our Las Cruces days together in the early '70's. One of the most inspiring people we ever met. An excellent writer, an engaging friend, and an adventurer who leaves a hole in our lives even these so many years later.
Love, love, and more love.

This was just lovely. I'm sorry you're feeling bitter, overworked and lonely at times. I'll be 40 next month, and I think all of us in the business struggle with these feelings. Just yesterday, a longtime friend and fellow journalist told me I need to work on an 'exit plan' from print.
I've been reading you since Austin (and met you once briefly when you signed my 'Off Ramp,' at NLGJA), and while I'm not a TV watcher, I'm still one of your legion of fans.

This wonderful tribute has helped me know more about the witty, bright warm step-daughter who was so loved by her family and all who knew her. Barb's smile will be forever etched on my heart.

Hi Hank: I mentioned earlier Barb had pixie dimples and the devil's own wit. Consider that an endearing and forceful combination every newsroom should lust after even and especially if news managers tend to dismiss those folks a pain in the como se llama. Let us hope there are other Barbs out there inspiring journalists to improve their crafts and maybe restore a bit of seditious joy to the hurly-burly of our new-media work stations. I'm not ready to give up the possibility but will confess to teetering on the cliff.

I am a fellow newspaperman who has admired your work for years. This blog post hit me where I live -- hit me in several vulnerable places. Thank you for your memories and your honesty

Thank you, Hank. Your heartfelt remembrance of Barbara is spot on and eased my coming to terms with a world less kind for her passing.

There's no doubt that the Trib was her zenith and her home, but she was generous and a diabolically excellent editor from the beginning. I met her in the mid-70s when she was moonlighting at the J-school at NMSU. Her day job was at the Las Cruces Sun News and she taught news editing in her off hours. She had a practice of tracking down everyone who had a by-line in the college newspaper and chatting us up. All too soon in those conversations, we'd recognize that there was more to our stories than we had appreciated. She wasn't paid to do that, she did it for the love of good journalism. Our friendship was formed in those "aha" discussions. Like many, I know that Barbara made me better. That's the best legacy I can imagine.

Thanks, Hank. Barb was the spirit of The Trib in its final, glorious era, and in tributes like this, they both live on.
